Teaching Philosophy

FOUNDATION AND GOALS

As an Adjunct Instructor, my concept of teaching and learning is focused on facilitating instruction using real world examples of business and technology for adult learners. My goal for teaching students is to get them thinking from a holistic perspective of managing a business. I believe that students that are future business leaders must ask questions and probe their business ideas with feedback from the market. I do not want my students to be afraid to fail. Instead, I want them to understand that businesses are constantly redefining the business model based on customers’ needs and successful entrepreneurs can identify these trends.

I am always seeking new ways to differentiate my instruction based on my students’ learning styles. I use a combination of various techniques that appeal to multiple types of learners to differentiate instruction: 1) Power Point and instructional videos for visual learners, 2) Audio samples for auditory learners, and 3) Hands on projects including group work for kinesthetic learners. I encourage class participation and student discourse utilizing real-world simulations and case studies.  I believe that interpersonal contact is important and class participation is essential to student’s comprehending the fundamentals of business and entrepreneurship. Catering to various types of learning styles allows me to reach students in a manner that helps them best learn the concepts through application of the skills being taught.

My goals for my students are to critically think about business and economics and how they can impact their own communities.

My goals are as follows:

  • To help students develop their ideas and start a sustainable business
  • To embolden students with confidence so that they can compete in the global marketplace
  • To foster a love of learning and continue to develop a lifelong learning attitude

ASSESSMETS

In assessing students’ learning, I have found that diverse types of assessments are critical for gauging comprehension. For example, I use a weekly quiz in which students write a (5) five paragraph essay. This allows them to critically think about the subject matter and practice written communication skills. I structure the quizzes around one question that is relevant to the previous chapter. The assignment extends the students’ depth of knowledge by asking them to apply their understanding of the concepts, articulate new ideas or outcomes for a business that we are analyzing, or synthesize multiple concepts to provide justification for their own ideas or concepts based on current business ideas or topics.

I use a rubric for evaluation and provide feedback including grammar, content and comprehension. The purpose of this assessment is that it ensures students are reading, critically thinking, and fully communicating their perspective. This promotes deep reflection, avoids parroting, and provides students a chance to synthesize their thought processes with a thorough analysis of the concepts.

CONCLUSION

My philosophy of teaching asserts that students are entitled to quality instruction that appeals to diversified learners with opportunities to work in group activities, active listening, stimulating interactions with each other. Curriculum materials should be timely and relevant with current environments. To achieve the goal of student learning, I strive to implement strategies that create a collaborative atmosphere. The composition of my teaching practices includes facilitating adult learners where I wish to bring real-world business experience to the classroom.  I believe that these experiences are needed for building business capacity in a highly competitive market.
